Derek Lee Meyer
Derek Meyer, 28, died in July 2018 after deputies found him unresponsive in his cell at the Athens-Clarke County Jail in Athens, Georgia. He was taken to a hospital on life support and died there on July 31, 2018. The Clarke County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation opened investigations into his death. In a November 2018 report, a GBI spokesman said an autopsy by the state Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a suicide by hanging, a finding that took three months because of a backlog at that office.
