Derek Dean
Derek Dean, 48, died on March 23, 2025, while held at the St. Louis City Justice Center. According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and Interim Corrections Commissioner Doug Burris, jail staff found him on the floor on Saturday and took him to a hospital, and he was discharged back to the jail. The next morning staff found him unresponsive in his cell, and he was pronounced dead at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Officials have not released a cause of death, though they cited a medical emergency with seizures suspected and said there were no obvious signs of trauma. The medical examiner's report and a police investigation are pending, and his attorney, Bob Taafee, confirmed that he was the man who died.
