Denny Simmons
Denny Simmons was held in the old stone jail at the Indian agency north of Anadarko, Oklahoma, after the sheriff moved him there. Early on June 13, 1913, a mob of about 300 people came to the courthouse and demanded the county jail keys, which the sheriff handed over. The mob then broke into the agency jail, took Simmons, and hanged him from a tree about three-quarters of a mile north of town, where his body was shot and set on fire. The sheriff cut the body down that morning and said he did not recognize anyone in the mob.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob of about 300 people demanded the county jail keys from the sheriff, broke into the Indian agency jail where Simmons had been moved, and hanged him; the sheriff said he did not recognize anyone in the mob.
Reported by: Sheriff Blankenship (the agency that held him). The only account of how this person died comes from the agency that held him.
