Denny Adán González
Denny Adan Gonzalez, 33, was a man from Cuba who had been living in North Carolina before U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement held him at the Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia. His mother, Lourdes Gonzalez, described him as humble, respectful and very family-oriented, and said he made bracelets to sell to others held there, exercised, encouraged people around him, and hoped to work in construction in Mexico with a friend. He died on April 28, 2026, and ICE, CoreCivic and the Stewart County coroner have described his death as suicide by hanging from a bed sheet in a segregation cell, while the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating. Reporting based on 911 records said responders took about 35 minutes to reach the facility because of an ambulance shortage. His family, who live in Cuba and Spain, disputes the suicide finding and believes a guard was responsible, and another person held at the facility has given an account that contradicts the official version.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). ICE and the county coroner say he died by self-inflicted hanging, while his family disputes that finding and believes a guard was responsible; reporting based on 911 records says an ambulance shortage delayed responders by about 35 minutes.
Reported by: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (the agency that held him); CoreCivic (the agency that held him); Stewart County coroner Sybil Ammons (medical examiner or coroner); his family; a detainee's account (witnesses); reporting based on 911 records (reporters).
