Dennis Green

58 years old · died September 22, 2023 · Campbell County Courthouse Holding Cell, Campbell County, Wyoming

Dennis Green was a Gillette man whose family says he struggled for years with lifelong pain after a logging accident when he was 17, and a former neighbor described him as a really good guy. He was held in a holding cell at the Campbell County Courthouse after a court appearance in September 2023 and died after a medical emergency there, with reports giving the date as September 21 or 22 and placing his death in Casper on September 23. The Campbell County coroner ruled it a suicide by partial hanging, and the sheriff's office and Gillette Police Department describe it as an apparent suicide under investigation. His wife, Tara Green, says she asked the jail to place him on suicide watch and was told it would be handled, and the family says the sheriff's office has not answered their questions about why he was not watched more closely.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). The coroner ruled it a suicide by partially suspended hanging, but his family says deputies did not keep a closer watch on him and that the sheriff's office never answered their request for suicide watch, and the Gillette Police Department is still investigating how closely he was monitored.

Reported by: Campbell County Coroner Paul Wallem (medical examiner or coroner); Sheriff Scott Matheny, Campbell County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); Gillette Police Department (outside investigators); Tara Green and DeBar Green, family (family or their lawyers); Wyofile (reporters).
