Dempsey Carr
Dempsey Carr was hanged on June 20, 1823, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, as a court had ordered, before a large crowd. He was taken from the jail to the gallows in a cart, and a minister preached at the scaffold. Before his death he called his wife and several acquaintances to him, urged them to seek salvation so they could join him in a better world, and said he had been converted thirteen days earlier. A letter reprinted in the Daily National Intelligencer says the first rope broke, he fell to the ground, and he was hanged again after a short interval.
Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state
Reported by: correspondent in Suffolk, reprinted from the Norfolk Herald (reporters); a subscriber in Nansemond county, in a letter reprinted from the Norfolk paper.
