Dean Butterfield, 59, was an auto mechanic from Nevada, Missouri. He died in October 2024 while held at the Vernon County Jail, where he was being held without bond. His family and people held with him told a Kansas City Star columnist that he was denied the medical care he asked for during nearly six weeks in custody, and that he was punished for asking.
