David Mitchell
David Mitchell was 46 when he died on April 17, 2023, while held at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, Vermont. Men held near him describe him as a close friend who talked with them through the cell vents and used an oxygen tank for his breathing. Vermont State Police said he had difficulty breathing that day. Five men held near him say he begged for medical help before and after a brief medical visit, and that a corrections officer threatened him with segregation. The autopsy and state investigations are still pending, and the corrections commissioner has denied any misconduct.
