David L. McKain
David L. McKain, 41, of Canton, worked as a laborer in the roofing industry and liked canoeing, paddle boarding and riding his four-wheeler, and he spent time with his three children. His memorial tribute said that through organ donation he saved the lives of several people. He was held at the Stark County Jail, where the jail's own standard called for checks every 15 minutes. A corrections officer's statement says he saw McKain hanging about 7:30 a.m. on November 29, 2023, radioed for help, and that officers moved him to a common area before firefighter medics took him to a Canton hospital, where he died on December 3. Whether the required checks were made on time is disputed: the officer's statement and a state inspection report differ from the jail's 15-minute standard, and the sheriff's office declined to comment.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). Corrections officer Jason Rohr says McKain hanged himself, and a state inspection report questions whether jail staff made the required 15-minute checks on time, a point the sheriff's office declined to address.
Reported by: Corrections officer Jason Rohr (the agency that held him); Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction jail inspector report (outside investigators).
