David Earl Miller
David Earl Miller, 61, was put to death in the electric chair at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on December 6, 2018, after about 36 years on Tennessee's death row. He had chosen electrocution over lethal injection, and his lawyers argued that the choice was coerced. His lawyers said he had a long history of mental illness and childhood abuse, and submitted an 89-page clemency petition describing it. Governor Bill Haslam declined to grant clemency, and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene. The Tennessee Department of Correction recorded the execution.
Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. His lawyers argued his choice of electrocution was coerced, and one account says he had a long history of mental illness and childhood sexual and physical abuse.
Reported by: Tennessee Department of Correction (the agency that held him); media witnesses.
