David Boone

died September 11, 1889 · Burke County Jail, Burke County, North Carolina

David Boone was held in the Morganton jail in Burke County, North Carolina. In the early morning of September 11, 1889, about a hundred masked men came to the jail and demanded the keys, and when the keys were refused they broke open his cell door with crowbars and heavy hammers. Accounts say they bound him, took him to a railroad bridge and hanged him with the same rope as Frank Stack, another man held there. The coroner's inquest found that he died at the hands of persons unknown, and a 1914 Monroe Journal account reported that the two men lynched were innocent.
