died April 5, 1909 · city jail, Escambia County, Florida

Dave Alexander was held in the Pensacola city jail on April 5, 1909, when a mob took him from the jail and hanged him in the Plaza, firing shots into his body. One account says about fifty masked men overpowered the desk sergeant and bound a turnkey with a rope, while another says seven to twelve men overpowered the officers on duty and took the jail key. The city council and board of safety moved to condemn the lynching and investigate it.
