Darrell Edward Davidson
Darrell Edward Davidson, 39, died in October 2023 while held at the Marion County Jail in Florida. His sister, Leslie Daugherty, has pressed for accountability for his sake and for his young toddler son. Ocala Gazette reporting says that reports from the jail describe him pleading for medical help and that the jail medical director initially refused to move him to the infirmary before he collapsed and was taken to a hospital, where he died. The Gazette also reports that officers used excessive force against him in the days before his death, and that the article notes about fifty wounds on his body. The District 5 Medical Examiner's Office first attributed the death to natural causes linked to a blood disorder, then amended the report on June 12, 2026 to list the manner as undetermined and cite the earlier use-of-force incident; the family is seeking independent review.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff (disputed; neglect alleged). The medical examiner first ruled the death natural from a blood disorder, then amended the report to undetermined citing a use-of-force incident, while the Ocala Gazette found excessive force by detention officers and says he pleaded for medical help that the jail medical director initially refused.
Reported by: District 5 Medical Examiner's Office (medical examiner or coroner); Ocala Gazette (reporters).
