Darin McCafferty
Darin McCafferty was 56, and his widow, Elisabeth McCafferty, has described his struggle with bipolar disorder and her efforts to get him treatment. He was held at the Douglas County jail in Oregon and was found dead in his cell four days after arriving there, in May 2022. Elisabeth McCafferty says she tried and failed to get law enforcement to force him into treatment before that, and that people in a mental health crisis belong in a hospital rather than a jail cell.
