Daren Borges
Daren Borges died on June 13, 2014, while held at the Humboldt County jail in Eureka, California, where he had been placed in a sobering cell. Officers found him during a check and he was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Hospital. The Humboldt County District Attorney's Office determined in an autopsy that he died of acute methamphetamine intoxication, while his family's attorneys contend he did not receive adequate medical care. His mother, Stephany Borges, brought a lawsuit so that no one else would suffer the same fate, and in 2017 a federal jury found three correctional officers negligent in failing to provide adequate medical treatment. The county was expected to appeal, and the sheriff's office said its officers did what they were supposed to do.
