Danny Burden
Danny Burden, 41, was a diabetic who was booked into the Grant County jail in Kentucky on March 27, 2013. A blood test showed he badly needed insulin and a doctor ordered it, but according to a state police inquiry and his family's lawsuit, he never received it. Deputies found him unconscious in his cell about three hours after he entered the jail, and he died a week later at an area hospital. His brother Mark, a retired Kentucky State Police detective, said in a deposition that the death should not happen to anyone else, and the family's civil suit alleging neglect is pending.
Cause of death, as reported: Died from neglect by staff (disputed). A state police inquiry found he badly needed insulin and did not receive it, and his family's civil suit alleges neglect and is pending, while the jail's medical director testified he visited only about once a week.
Reported by: state police inquiry; his family's civil suit (family or their lawyers); federal suit over his death; jail's medical director (testimony) (the agency that held him).
Lawsuit: His family sued the Grant County jail over his death in a suit that was reported as pending, with no settlement or award amount reported.
