Daniel Z. Mattay
Daniel Z. Mattay, a 35-year-old man from Massillon, died on the morning of December 3, 2025, while held at the Stark County Jail awaiting trial. The Stark County Sheriff's Office said he died by suicide, and said jail staff gave him immediate medical care before he was taken to a hospital in Canton, where he was pronounced dead. Other accounts give his age as 33 and 34 and name a different hospital, Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, after transport by the Canton Fire Department. The sheriff's office, the Ohio Bureau of Adult Detention and the Stark County Coroner's Office are investigating his death.
