Daniel Valdez, 33, struggled with addiction, and his friend Mike Sorrentino said he was struggling badly toward the end. Valdez died by suicide at the Camden County Jail in 2016, hanging himself from a bedsheet tied to the upper bunk. Sorrentino, who shared Valdez's cell during intake, said Valdez went through withdrawal over four days, vomited his medication, fainted twice, and was not adequately treated by a nurse. The county said its nurses did their job and that an internal investigation did not corroborate Sorrentino's account.
