Daniel Taylor

30 years old · died August 20, 2021 · John E. Goode Pretrial Detention Facility, Duval County, Florida

Daniel Taylor, 30, was held at the Duval County jail in Jacksonville in August 2021. His family says he was soft-hearted, loved animals, music and time with friends, and that he made handmade cards for his sister Noel. After a confrontation with officers on August 13, 2021, he was sedated with ketamine by rescue crews, lost consciousness, and went into cardiac arrest; he was taken to hospital and died a week later after his family removed him from life support. The Medical Examiner's death certificate lists the death as a homicide, while the State Attorney's Office, citing conflicting autopsy opinions, concluded no staff would be charged, and the sheriff's office has not released footage or use-of-force reports. His family says about ten officers beat and subdued him, a claim the sheriff's office has not answered.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff (disputed). The Duval County medical examiner ruled the death a homicide from a lack of oxygen to the brain after a violent altercation with officers, while the State Attorney's Office found no inappropriate use of force and his family says about ten officers beat him and is contesting the official account.

Reported by: Duval County medical examiner (medical examiner or coroner); Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); State Attorney's Office (outside investigators); his family.
