Died in prison

Daniel Nevarez

31 years old · Illinois

Daniel Nevarez, 31, was held at an Illinois prison, where he complained for more than a year that he was not getting care for a growing knee mass. His family, including his brother Alonzo and his father Salvador, pressed the prison to act on his complaints. After a cancer diagnosis and treatment at an outside hospital, he was returned to his cell after a fall and head injury, fell into a coma and died that day. The autopsy cited a brain tumor with widespread metastases that followed a delayed cancer diagnosis, and the family and their attorney question why the cancer was not caught sooner.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). The autopsy attributes his death to brain tumor metastases after a delayed cancer diagnosis, and his family and attorney say he complained for over a year that he was not getting care and question why the cancer was not caught sooner.

Reported by: autopsy; family and attorney.
