Daniel Harrington
Daniel Harrington was 52 and had worked as a laborer and quarryman in Keokuk for many years after coming there as a child from Ohio. On a hot day in July 1911 he was found lying by a railroad car and taken to the city jail, where he was placed in an open cell. He died there within minutes, before the city physician arrived. The attending doctors attributed his death to alcoholism, and coroner Fred Korschgen holds that heat exhaustion combined with acute alcoholism caused it, while also announcing an inquest into whether proper attention and the handling of prisoners could have prevented the death. His widow said police had not notified her of his condition earlier.
