Dan Rout
Dan Rout, a Black man, was held in the Tangipahoa Parish jail in Amite, Louisiana, along with his brother. On July 29, 1917, a masked mob overpowered the jailer, took his keys, removed Rout from his cell and hanged him from a tree near the edge of Amite, according to an Associated Press report. The report says he repeatedly maintained his innocence and that his mother prayed for him, and a second report of the same events, which gives the date as July 20, 1917, says the men were taken from the jail at night and lynched within the city limits, without saying whether jail staff resisted or handed them over.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
