Dan Hawkins

died September 1, 1894 · Shelby County, Tennessee

Dan Hawkins was one of six Black men held in custody in late August or early September 1894, chained together and being taken by wagon toward Millington, Tennessee, under the charge of a deputy sheriff and a guard. Near a creek bridge in an isolated area, about fifty armed men stopped the wagon, held the deputy at gunpoint, and opened fire on the prisoners, killing Hawkins. Neither the deputy nor the driver recognized any of the attackers, and a coroner's jury found the account consistent with the only witness. An inquest jury found that the six men died at the hands of persons unknown, and an investigation was promised.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob of armed men stopped the wagon carrying Dan Hawkins and five other men chained together and shot them; the deputy and guard did not recognize the attackers, and an inquest jury found they died at the hands of persons unknown.
