Dan Arata
Daniel Arata, an Italian man who kept a saloon in Denver, Colorado, was held in the Denver county jail in late July 1893. On the night of July 26, a crowd newspapers estimated at between several thousand and fifteen thousand people broke through the jail's doors, took him from his cell and hanged him from a tree near the jail. Newspapers report that his body was then shot and dragged through the streets. The Rawlins Republican reported that jailer Captain Crews refused to hand him over, and that the mob broke through the doors and took the keys from the jailers. The Fremont Clipper reported that the guards retreated and hid the keys, while other accounts say officers were overpowered at the doors.
