D. W. Dilda was executed by hanging on a scaffold near Prescott, Arizona, on February 5, 1886, after being taken from the jail under guard by two local military companies, according to a Star special dispatch. He ate heartily that morning, asked to have his photograph taken, and bowed pleasantly to acquaintances as he was led to the place of execution. The dispatch reports that he remained composed when the death warrant was read to him. It says the trap was sprung at 12:03 p.m. and he was pronounced dead at 12:10 before about 1,000 onlookers. The dispatch attributes the cause of death to his neck being broken by the fall.
