Curtis Young
Curtis Young, a Black man, was held in the city jail at Clarksville, Missouri, in June 1898, alongside Sam Young. Newspapers report that a mob took both men from the jail around midnight and hanged them from a tree. One account places the tree about a mile outside the city, and officers from Bowling Green were said to have found both men dead. Accounts disagree on whether the local officers resisted the crowd or gave the men up.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took Curtis Young and his brother Sam from the Clarksville, Missouri jail and hanged them from a tree.
Reported by: St. Louis Post-Dispatch (reporters); Clarksville city jail (the agency that held him).
