Creole Mope
Creole Mope was one of three Black men held in the Marshall, Texas jail when a mob came for them in the early morning of April 30, 1909. According to the Palestine Daily Herald, the mob marched on the jail about 2 a.m., took the men out and hanged them. The Evening Star reported that militia who had guarded the jail for three days were relieved at midnight, and the mob formed soon after, taking the authorities by surprise. Accounts of whether jail officers resisted the mob, gave up the keys or handed the men over are not consistent across the reports.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took Creole Mope from the Marshall, Texas jail and hanged him, after the militia guarding the jail had been withdrawn.
Reported by: Palestine Daily Herald, Herald Special dispatch from Marshall (reporters); wire report.
