Cory Merchant
Cory Merchant was a man whose sister Krysti described him as passive and not a fighter, and the family's lawsuit says he attended Bible study. He was held at the Marion County Jail in Ocala, Florida, where, on Nov. 7, 2021, deputies say another person held there struck him several times during a fight and he fell and hit his head on the concrete floor. He was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center and died there on Nov. 13, 2021, and the sheriff's office has said it is still awaiting the official cause and manner of death. His sister filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the sheriff's office and several deputies, saying jail staff knew of the danger and could have prevented the attack, and the family says calls for detention deputies from others held there were ignored. A federal judge ruled against the estate on certain damages in December 2025, the family has appealed to the 11th Circuit, and the sheriff's office says the other person is responsible and disputes that staff were at fault.
