Cornelius McClary
Cornelius McClary, 33, was held at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, South Carolina, when fighting broke out across several housing units on the evening of April 15, 2018. The fighting lasted about seven hours and left seven men dead, and the state Department of Corrections described it as altercations between people held in the units. Lee County Coroner Larry Logan ruled his death a homicide caused by blood loss from multiple stab and incised wounds. A Post and Courier account said he could not get back into his cell, stumbled down a staircase and collapsed, and that no officer was present while he lay dying. At a later trial, prosecutors said a group of men stabbed him in a dormitory and that a correctional officer did not intervene, while the defense said the attacker feared for his life and prosecutors said the motive was revenge.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). The Lee County coroner ruled the death a homicide from stab and incised wounds, and a witness account says no officer was present to help him as he was dying.
Reported by: Lee County Coroner Larry Logan (medical examiner or coroner); SLED Agent Jamie Shaw, in testimony (outside investigators); another man held nearby, who watched (witnesses); prosecutors.
