Before he died, Coon You asked that a letter and a picture be sent to his family, so that his father and mother could see them, and he asked his countrymen to look after his body. The Amador Weekly Ledger reported that he was hanged at a gallows near the jail, before a large crowd. The paper said that during his final remarks he cried and was very agitated, and that he began to sink rapidly once the rope was placed around his neck. He also asked that his body be guarded against the doctors, according to the account.
