Died in jail or a lockup
Coke Williams
Coke Williams, a Black man, was held in the jail at Rosebud, Texas, when a mob took him from the jail on the night of December 20, 1909, and lynched him. The Associated Press report, published the next day in the Tonopah Daily Bonanza, is the only account given here. It uses the pronoun 'they' for Williams in a way the reporting does not tie to a clear gender, so this narrative uses the name throughout.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
