Clifton Branham
Clifton Branham was a guitar player who spent much of his time in the Wise County jail writing, including a memoir. He was executed by hanging in Wise County, Virginia, on September 25, 1903, and accounts say he played sacred songs on his guitar that morning. His sister, Millie Branham Cox, prayed aloud through the day, and friends and family gathered. Accounts say he was calm as he went to the gallows, and he was buried the following day.
