Clentis Lucas
Clentis Lucas died on November 22, 2018, after being held in the Bay County Jail. A notice of intent to sue, filed by the firm representing his surviving family, says a urinary tract infection went untreated after Hurricane Michael struck in October 2018, and that he developed sepsis. The family's account says he was placed on life support and taken to a hospital in Alabama, where he died. The Bay County Sheriff's Office disputes that his care and custody needs were not met.
Cause of death, as reported: Died from neglect by staff (disputed). Lucas's family's lawyer, Marie Mattox, says a urinary tract infection went untreated after Hurricane Michael and he died of sepsis, while the sheriff denies that care and custody needs went unmet.
Reported by: Marie Mattox's firm, representing Lucas' surviving family (family or their lawyers); Bay County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him).
