Clemente Pineda

36 years old · died August 1, 2023 · Multnomah County Detention Center, Multnomah County, Oregon

Clemente Pineda, 36, died on August 1, 2023, while held at Multnomah County's downtown Portland jail. His mother, Stella Pineda, drove six hours from Vale to visit him days before he died, and was turned away over a paperwork problem; she left him a message, and his attorney says it showed her love for him. According to the family, through attorney Hala Gores, he was going through withdrawal from fentanyl and staff checked on him six times that afternoon while he was breathing but unresponsive, with no medical attention until he stopped breathing. A medical examiner's report says he vomited over 24 to 48 hours and complained of stomach symptoms for days, and the county has agreed to a $2.5 million settlement with his family, which is not yet final.

Cause of death, as reported: Died from neglect by staff (disputed). The medical examiner's report says he vomited for 24 to 48 hours while detoxing from fentanyl, and his family's attorney says staff checked on him six times while he was unresponsive and gave him no medical attention until he stopped breathing.

Reported by: medical examiner's report (medical examiner or coroner); family, through attorney Hala Gores (family or their lawyers).

Lawsuit: His family reached a $2.5 million settlement with Multnomah County, which still needs approval from the county commissioners.
