Clayton Welte
Clayton Welte, 27, was held at Racine Correctional Institution in Wisconsin. His family says he was smart, outgoing and athletic, loved fitness and sports, taught his half-sisters to run hurdles and pole vault, and was protective of them, and his stepfather recalled teaching him to fish, ride a bike and ride a motorcycle. In March 2023 he was found in his cell, and staff gave him three doses of Narcan before he was pronounced dead at a hospital. The Racine County Medical Examiner's Office found he died of an overdose from a mixture of fentanyl, heroin and other drugs, and investigators never determined how the drugs entered the facility, while his family said he had struggled with addiction.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose. The medical examiner ruled the death an overdose from a mixture of fentanyl, heroin and other drugs.
