Claude Jones

60 years old · died December 7, 2000 · Huntsville Prison, Walker County, Texas

Claude Jones, 60, was executed by lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit in Huntsville, Texas, on December 7, 2000, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. His son Duane asked for DNA testing and said his father was not a person who would go out and murder someone on the street. The Innocence Project says a request to test a hair central to the case was never passed on to Governor George W. Bush, and that a 2010 DNA test found the hair did not belong to Jones. The victim's brother and a former sheriff remain convinced of his guilt, and in his final statement Jones told the victim's family he was sorry for their loss.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. The Innocence Project says a request to run DNA testing on a hair was never passed to Governor George W. Bush, and that later testing showed the hair was not Jones's.

Reported by: Texas Department of Criminal Justice (the agency that held him); Innocence Project (advocates).
