Died in jail or a lockup
Clarke
Clark, a man held in the jail at Monroe, Louisiana, was taken from the jail by a mob and hanged from a tree in the street in late April 1884. Several newspaper dispatches of the time report that the jailer surrendered the keys after the crowd demanded them, because resistance seemed useless. One account says the deputy sheriff told a coroner's inquest that masked men woke him in the early morning and he handed over the keys. The accounts differ on the exact night and on the size of the crowd.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody
