Executed
Claibe
Claibe was an enslaved man in Madison County, Kentucky, held in the Richmond jail in 1863 after the death of Lewis Eads. Local men intervened when a crowd tried to take matters into its own hands, and his case went to the Circuit Court, which sentenced him to hang. Court records quoted in the 1894 and 1888 accounts say he was hanged by the neck on August 1, 1863, in Richmond, and the 1888 account says the sheriff took him from the jail to a gallows on Irvine street and calls it the county's last legal execution.
