Cilivea Thyrion
Cilivea Thyrion, 20, died on December 16, 2022, while held in the Milwaukee County Jail's Special Needs Unit on suicide watch. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office called the death an apparent suicide, and the medical examiner's autopsy reports, as described by the Wisconsin Examiner, note that she ate an adult diaper given to her by jail staff, along with other findings. Staff were said to have performed a Heimlich maneuver and called 911 before she was found unconscious. Her mother, Kerrie Hirte, of Green Bay, says her daughter's messages asked for help and a medication adjustment, and her family's lawyer says she choked on the diaper provided by jail officers. The district attorney declined to file charges, and the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department investigated the death, while a federal lawsuit names Wellpath, the jail's medical provider.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). The sheriff's office describes an apparent suicide, but the family's lawyer, B'Ivory LaMarr, says she was on suicide watch and choked on an adult-sized diaper provided by jail officers, and a federal lawsuit over the death names the jail's medical provider, Wellpath.
Reported by: Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held her); Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office (medical examiner or coroner); Waukesha County Sheriff's Department (outside investigators); B'Ivory LaMarr, lawyer for the family (family or their lawyers).
Lawsuit: Her family's lawyer, B'Ivory LaMarr, has pursued a federal lawsuit over her death at the Milwaukee County Jail, which names Wellpath, the jail's medical provider, as a defendant.
