Jellerson was held in the jail at Audubon, Iowa, in early February 1885. A dispatch from Audubon, published in the St. Landry Democrat, says a mob of about one hundred armed men battered down the jail walls before four in the morning, dragged him out, and hanged him on the grand stand in the public square. That account says the sheriff was on the scene and could not stop them. Other papers reported that three men were taken from the jail, and one said two were shot and one hanged, so the accounts do not agree on how Jellerson died.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob broke into the Audubon, Iowa jail, took Jellerson and hanged him on the grand stand in the public square, while the sheriff, present on the scene, could not stop it.
Reported by: Audubon, Ia. dispatch published in the St. Landry Democrat (reporters).
