Christopher James Brookins, 55, of Kinston, died at the Onslow County Detention Center in Jacksonville, North Carolina, on Sunday, October 11, 2026. A detention officer found him unresponsive in his cell around 4 a.m. The Onslow County Sheriff's Office has described the death as an apparent medical emergency. The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating at the sheriff's request, and the cause of death is pending an autopsy.
