Chris Cox, 43, was a chef who loved baseball, his mother Catherine Cox said, and his parents say he had been struggling with addiction and had been clean for a year before relapsing. He was held at the Franklin County Jail in Missouri and was found unresponsive in his cell on Saturday, April 22, 2023. Sheriff Steve Pelton said there was nothing obvious as to the cause of death, and the body was sent to the St. Louis County Medical Examiner's Office. His family says he was visibly impaired when he was taken to a hospital for an evaluation before booking and should have stayed there. Investigators said a small item he was seen handling could be consistent with inhaling particles, but could not confirm he took anything.
