A man identified only as Christian was hanged in an open field on July 17, 1891, after spending his last night in jail. According to a Roanoke Times account published the next day, he met his death calmly, though he showed fear just before the trap was sprung. The same account said the fall did not break his neck and that he died of strangulation.
