Chris Baldwin

died February 24, 2019 · Davidson County Jail, Davidson County

Chris Baldwin was a father of four. His parents, Arnold and Lisa Baldwin, say he was bipolar and had struggled with heroin addiction for years. He died on February 24, 2019, while held at the Davidson County Jail, and his parents say he died by suicide by hanging. They say he should have been placed on suicide watch after an earlier suicide attempt at the same jail that year. The sheriff's office said the jail's mental health provider, WellPath, decides whether a person needs suicide watch, and WellPath had not responded to a request for comment.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). His parents say he died by suicide but should have been placed on suicide watch after an earlier attempt at the same jail that year, and the sheriff's office says WellPath decides on suicide watch.

Reported by: parents Arnold and Lisa Baldwin (family or their lawyers); Davidson County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him).
