Chavis, 33, died on November 18, 2022, while held at Maury Correctional in Greene County, North Carolina. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety said he was found unresponsive and that he died by suicide, a claim it attributed to its own announcement. He was pronounced dead at 7:08 p.m. The department said law enforcement is investigating the death and that it is conducting its own review.
