Charlie Pickett
Charlie Pickett, also recorded as Charles Pickett, was a Black man held in the county jail at Ellaville, Georgia, in April 1911. Shortly after midnight on April 8, 1911, a masked mob took him and two other men from the jail, and the jailer said he was powerless to resist and surrendered them. One account says about twenty-five men led the three to a pine orchard and shot them. Another account says about one hundred men overpowered the jailer and hanged two of the men on trees, with a third shot as he ran. Reports differ on the number of men involved and on how each man was killed.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). Jailer Baugh said he was powerless to resist and surrendered the men to about twenty-five masked men, while a second account says a mob of about one hundred overpowered the jailer and dragged the prisoners from their cells.
