Charley Jones

died May 6, 1914 · Grovetown City Jail, Columbia County, Georgia

Charley Jones, a Black man, was held in the Grovetown town lockup in Georgia in May 1914 after several white men, including a constable, seized and beat him. Fearing he would be lynched from the wooden lockup, townspeople began moving him toward Appling for safekeeping, with two deputies escorting him. Reports say a mob took him from the deputies on the road near Grovetown and shot him to death on May 6 or 7, 1914, and one account says he was also hanged. The papers do not say whether the deputies resisted or handed him over.
