Died in jail or a lockup
Charles Shelton
Charles Shelton was held in the jail at Los Lunas, New Mexico, in March 1882. Newspaper reports of the time say that masked men took him from the jail along with two other men and hanged him from a tree near the town on March 8. Accounts of his family, work and life were not carried in these reports, so the record of his death rests on the newspapers' brief accounts.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
Reported by: Albuquerque dispatch (news reports reprinted in several newspapers) (reporters); National Associated Press (reporters); The Patron Of Husbandry (reporters); The Iola Register (reporters); Denver Republican (reporters).
