Died in jail or a lockup
Charles Selyers
Charles Selyers was held in the county jail at Lexington, Missouri, in August 1902. According to the Waterbury Democrat, a masked mob came for the prisoners at about 1:30 a.m., and the jailer refused their demand. Several men broke in the outer door and cut through the steel cell doors to reach him, then took him and hanged him from a tree about half a mile south of town. Before he was hanged, he was allowed to make a statement to the mob, and another account names Harry Gates as hanged the same night.
