Charles Ruggles
Charles Ruggles was the younger of two brothers held in the Redding jail in California. Around July 24, 1892, about forty armed, masked men took him from the jail and hanged him with his older brother near a railroad company's woodshed. Newspaper accounts say the men forced the jailer to open the sheriff's safe to get the keys, while the sheriff and deputy sheriff were asleep at home. The older brother was reported to have said that Charles was innocent.
